Robert Heller's Perfume Vaporizer c1865

Robert Heller's Perfume Vaporizer dates to 1865. I saw a small ad in an 1865 newspaper that mentions this is a new device. Though one can also find these in the same shape, packaged in the same manner and manufactured by Gilbertson of London, England.

The device consists of two glass tubes, held together by gilded brass mountings.

In order to use the device, you would insert the longer tube into the perfume bottle, the hold your finger over the area where the two tubes connect, then put the other end between your lips and blow, then the perfume is expelled from the bottle.

Mokin's Pocket Atomizers c1920s

Around 1900, Mokins of Paris manufactured what is known as a pistolet a parfum, or Perfume Pistol. The pistol refers to the shape of the small assorted color striped glass bottles. These glass bottles were blown in Germany and are extremely light and fragile.  The small bottles were fitted with a rubber atomizer bulb so that the perfume could be sprayed onto the wearer.

The more expensive bottles were sold in a deluxe silvered metal case lined with red velvet which follows the shape of the atomizer. Other bottles were housed in a leather case similar in shape to the silvered one and cheaper models were housed in simple boxes or "purses".

The perfume bottles have a round gilded foil label embossed with "Mokins Paris Bte SGDG".

On one bottle, the original label was still present for the perfume. he label has the words "French Perfumettes Jaspy Buisson Fleuri". The "Buisson Fleuri" perfume was launched around 1920 by Parfums Jaspy of France.

The New York French Export Bureau were the sole agents for Mokins perfume bottles and Jaspy perfumes in the United States.

The perfume presentations were encased in a small chamois pouch. These atomizers were small enough for a lady to carry in her purse. These may have been sold up until the 1930s.

Czech Airplane Perfume Atomizers c1920s-1930s

in the 1920s and 1930s, aviation was just starting to become more common, and more daring with such flying champions like Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhardt,  the airplane itself lent itself to various forms of decor during the Art Deco period. As you can see in the following images, airplanes were also a part of perfume bottle decorations, whether having the bottle itself become the main body of the airplane or having the atomizer hardware itself the airplane.

La Depeche, 1926:

"Shown at the Foire de Lyon of 1926 - The Artyse Vaporizer, 16 rue d’Orleans, Neuilly-sur-Seine. A pleasant surprise was reserved for us at the Artyse stand which presented, among other new products, its latest creation. The "Artyse Vaporizer", a truly artistic and original design, represents a fully blossomed rose which is gleaned from a superb golden butterfly: a rose bud replaces the pear, always unsightly elsewhere. Please ask your perfumer to show it to you."
